Annecy Film Festival to proceed following knife attack; open-air screenings postponed

Annecy Film Festival to proceed following knife attack

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival will go ahead as planned this weekend after yesterday’s tragic attack in the center of the city, which injured six people, including four children.

“Now it has been confirmed that it was an isolated act,” according to a statement from the festival published today. Following consultations with the authorities and the “appointment of Mayor François Astrog”, the festival will open as planned on Sunday June 11 and will run until Saturday June 17.

As a “sign of support for bereaved families and victims,” the festival will postpone the outdoor screening by one day until Monday, June 12.

The outdoor screening will take place in Le Passier Park by Lake Annecy, which is exactly where the man attacked several people with a knife yesterday.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Vaughn said the four children injured in the attack had undergone surgery and were in stable condition.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Annecy today (Friday June 9) after the attacks and earlier met the victims at a Grenoble hospital.

Today’s Annecy statement read: “Annecy in France and people elsewhere are all shocked by the tragic events of yesterday.

“The festival projections reflect the values they have always defended: sharing, solidarity and fraternity.”
