Chatrian and Riesenbeek announced last year that they would step down after the 2024 tournament, when the five-year festival ends. For the 2025 edition, the Berlinale will return to a solo director model under the direction of Tricia Tuttle, former incoming chief director of the BFI London Film Festival.

When asked why she resigned, Chatrian said: Marriott and I had a five-year mission. Of course, I first said that I was willing to move forward because we have common ambitions with the [German] Ministry of Culture.

“However, those responsible for the future of the Berlinale believed that this two-leader system was wrong and I didn’t think I could run the festival on my own. So, although this is the end of our mandate, we have something new The person and I are sure that we will both do everything possible to maintain the great tradition of this festival.

Asked to spend more time at the festival, Riesenbeek focused on running the Berlinale during the pandemic. “My conclusion is that Berlinel survived during the pandemic,” he said.

In 2021, a short online festival for the industry and press was held in March, followed by an in-person summer event for the general public. The 2022 festival was held on a smaller scale with strict hygiene measures, and events such as the European Film Market and Berlinale Talents were held online only. “I think that is already our greatest achievement,” said Riesenbeek.

Chatriyan said that he was proud of his latest selection and the previous edition. “As I look back at the selection process so far, how the film has been received by audiences and the media, how it has traveled around the world, I can see my commitment to asking questions and helping people find their questions. I think that we achieved Our goal of finding our own place in this world, we needed it even more during the pandemic.

He highlighted one of the “happiest memories” of him hosting the 2021 Berlinale Summer Special during the pandemic.
