Volunteer-run cities no longer hold free music festivals for 16 years.
The Hartford Music Festival said it was “done” because it could no longer follow the advice of the Hertfordshire Security Advisory Group (SAG).
The five said it was “impossible” to organize their annual Musical Mystery Tour (MMT).
The advisory group, made up of representatives from local government and emergency services, is external and says its advice is “advice” for public safety and welfare.
“This is a very sad moment for us. Our baby has grown a lot.
With only five full-time jobs, she said, “100 people is too few to accomplish what is required today.”
The SAG said it “gave us a long and arduous ‘to do’ list” which, while not necessary, was “impossible” to complete.
“In short, we can’t do this anymore,” she added.
The last MMT was held on August 28.
A joint statement from East Herts Council and Hertfordshire Police states that “it is the responsibility of the organizer to seek advice in preparing for the event.”
“Various public safety issues were raised during the briefing at MMT 2022 and discussed with event organizers, with suggestions for steps that could be taken to minimize recurrences.”
“The group has no authority to contest or cancel the event and it is up to the organizers to decide whether to hold the event in 2023.”
If the event goes ahead, he said, “I am pleased to be able to reconvene the SAG meeting to provide any necessary advice and guidance.”
